The term English saddle is much like the term bread, there are many types of English saddles within the term just as there are many types of bread.

Originally, the English saddle was designed for fox hunting over rough terrain where the horse and rider had to jump obstacles. Since then it has been useful for many other types of sporting events.
Developed for riding both flat surface and rough terrain, the All Purpose saddle is the most versatile.
A jumping saddle is just that; a saddle made for terrain that must jump the horse and rider over obstacles. This is also often called a forward saddle.

The saddle primarily for flat land, is called the Dressage saddle. With characteristics of a longer base and deeper seat, it also has a wider bearing surface to spread the weight of rider over the horses back.
