Red Velvet Cake Recipes – The Best of!
Red velvet cake recipes are sought after recipes because this sweet, rich layered cake with a very distinctive red color is very different from any other cakes today. The color of the red velvet cake varies from red-brown, to dark red to a startling bright red. White icing or frosting (butter roux or cream cheese buttermilk frosting are popular) is almost always used, and this brings out the cake’s red color even more.
Red Velvet Cake seems to be an American original although there is no absolute proof on that. A publication printed in 1885 The Boston Cooking School Cook and Good Things to Eat may have been the forerunners of the Red Velvet Cake. In the early days there was nothing red about the Velvet Cake because they were regular butter cakes. The RED in the red velvet cake recipe was added later.
