Red velvet cake recipes are sought after recipes because this sweet, rich layered cake with a very distinctive red color is very different from any other cakes today. A publication printed in 1885 The Boston Cooking School Cook and Good Things to Eat may have been the forerunners of the Red Velvet Cake. In the early days there was nothing red about the Velvet Cake because they were regular butter cakes. The RED in the red velvet cake recipe was added later.
