Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is often referred to as a silent killer because it can cause considerable damage to the body over a period of many years without producing any physical symptoms of high blood pressure. Ultimately of course this damage will itself produce symptoms and these could thus the said to be secondary symptoms of hypertension.
High blood pressure damages the blood vessels throughout the body and these include the tiny blood vessels which supply oxygen and nutrients to the eyes. When these blood vessels are damaged they can result in a condition known as retinopathy producing bleeding in the eye, a swelling of the optic nerve, blurred vision and ultimately a complete loss of vision.
